Dad Calls 911 Minutes Before leaving Child Alone At Home

A phone call just before 6 a.m. led deputies to a scene they weren’t expecting.

Authorities in Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office say two 1-year-old infants were found left alone in a cold, unpowered home early on the morning of December 31 in Congress—a situation officials called deeply concerning.

A Call That Raised Immediate Alarms

Just before 6:00 a.m., YCSO received a call from a man who said he needed to leave for work and told dispatchers there were children at the house. A deputy was able to reach the caller by phone, where the man confirmed he was the children’s father and that two 1-year-old infants were inside the home.

The deputy told the man he was responsible for his children and needed to arrange proper care rather than leave them alone. Given the seriousness of the call, the deputy immediately responded to the address to check on the infants’ safety.

What the Deputy Found Inside the Home

When the deputy arrived, he observed a generator running outside the residence with an extension cord leading through a partially open front door. Inside, the deputy found the infants strapped into car seats and positioned in front of a space heater. No adults were present in the home.

The deputy checked the residence to ensure no one else was inside and then requested assistance from the Congress Fire Department to evaluate the children.

Infants Taken Somewhere Warm and Safe

Because the home had no power and temperatures were cold, firefighters transported the infants to the local fire station to keep them warm and safe while deputies continued the investigation.

Nearly an hour later, deputies were able to speak with both parents in person.

Parents Booked, Investigation Ongoing

According to YCSO, the parents—41-year-old Thomas Jordan and 25-year-old Maira Moreno—were both booked on charges of child abuse and possession of drug paraphernalia. The investigation remains ongoing.

The infants were placed into the care of Department of Child Safety.

Sheriff Praises Deputy’s Response

YCSO publicly thanked the Congress Fire Department for their rapid response and care of the infants. Sheriff Rhodes also praised the deputy’s actions, saying the incident underscores the importance of treating every call seriously.

“This incident highlights exactly why we trust our deputies to rely on their experience,” the sheriff said. “I am proud of this deputy’s quick thinking and his commitment to making sure these two infants were safe.”

Officials did not release further details as the investigation continues.
