Rachel always assumed her eight year old son, Owen, would be the first child racing toward the front door when school ended. He loved science projects, reading time, and playing basketball at recess, but he also loved being home with his family.
That was why his answer one afternoon caught her completely off guard. While they were driving home, Owen quietly said he wished school lasted longer every day. Rachel laughed at first, thinking he was joking, until she noticed he was staring out the window instead of smiling.

Rachel asked what made him want a longer school day. She expected him to mention his favorite teacher or a classroom project that he did not want to end.
Instead, Owen hesitated for several seconds before answering in a voice that barely rose above a whisper.

Mrs. Parker smiled and said Owen often stayed a few extra minutes helping organize classroom supplies. She thought he simply enjoyed feeling useful.

A few weeks later Owen came home from school carrying a permission slip for a family reading night. Instead of disappearing into his room, he asked if everyone could attend together.

Mrs. Parker emailed Rachel near the end of the month to share something encouraging. Owen had become even more relaxed during group activities and no longer volunteered to stay late organizing supplies every afternoon.
Instead, he happily packed his backpack and headed home with the same excitement as many of his classmates.
