Missing South Carolina Mom Found in Hospital 200 Miles from Home After Vanishing During Church Trip

A 37-year-old South Carolina mother has been found alive in an Atlanta hospital after disappearing during a weekend trip for a church conference, leaving her family and authorities scrambling to understand what happened.

According to the Cobb County Police Department, Leigh McAlister, of Lexington, South Carolina, was reported missing after she traveled to Atlanta, Georgia, on February 13 for a church event and failed to return home as planned. Her husband, Rob McAlister, contacted law enforcement when he could not reach her and grew increasingly alarmed.

Last Seen at Atlanta Grocery Store

Surveillance footage showed McAlister at a Publix supermarket in the Buckhead area of Atlanta on February 14, the day she was last seen by her family according to investigators. After her disappearance was reported, authorities located her abandoned SUV near The Battery, a popular shopping and entertainment district in Cobb County, but her phone, wallet, and personal belongings were still inside.

The disappearance prompted widespread concern locally, with friends and family sharing a missing person alert and urging anyone with information to come forward. McAlister and her husband share a 4-year-old son, adding to the urgency and worry during the search.

Located in Hospital, Investigation Underway

Several days into the search, Atlanta police located McAlister at a hospital in the city, approximately 200 miles from her home in Lexington. Officials have said she is alive, but they have not released further details about her condition or how she ended up in the hospital so far from her vehicle and belongings.

The Cobb County Police Major Crimes Unit is overseeing the investigation to determine what happened from the time McAlister was last seen until she was discovered in the hospital. Authorities have not yet shared specifics about her travel, communications, or possible reasons for her disappearance.

Family and Community Reaction

Friends and family expressed relief that McAlister was found alive, but questions remain about the unexplained gap in her whereabouts and how she came to be hospitalized without her car, phone, or wallet.

Neighbors and community members have rallied on social media in support of the McAlister family, praising law enforcement efforts and offering prayers. The family has asked for privacy as investigators continue to look into the case.

The Bigger Picture

Disappearance cases like this are a reminder of the anxiety families face when loved ones go missing unexpectedly. When a parent vanishes far from home without communication, the emotional toll on families can be significant, especially when children are left worrying about a parent’s well-being.

As the investigation proceeds, authorities are urging anyone with additional information to contact the Cobb County Police Department to help fill in the gaps of what led to McAlister’s mysterious disappearance and recovery.
