Kindergarten Teacher Arrested After Police Say She Used Illegal Drugs in School Bathroom

A kindergarten teacher in Wisconsin has been arrested after authorities say she used illegal drugs on school property, raising questions about how schools can keep students safe when staff members may be struggling.

According to public records and police reports, 58-year-old Laurie Laubenstein, a teacher at Lincoln Elementary School in New London, Wisconsin, was charged with possession of cocaine with an enhancement for the offense occurring “on or near” school grounds. The charge followed an investigation that began after an anonymous tip raised concerns about her behavior at the school.

How the Allegations Surfaced

School staff told authorities they noticed Laubenstein acting differently and saw her frequently going into the classroom bathroom with her purse. Some coworkers also reported finding bloody tissues and a white powdery substance in the bathroom trash. These observations were shared with a school resource officer, who took the concerns to police.

The school resource officer initially tested a sample of the powder, which required follow-up testing. A more thorough analysis later confirmed the presence of cocaine, prompting further investigation. A police K-9 unit was used in the search that followed.

What Police Say Happened

Authorities say Laubenstein eventually admitted to using cocaine on school property, including in the staff bathroom and the bathroom attached to her classroom. She reportedly told investigators she started using the drug several months ago and had purchased cocaine recently.

Laubenstein was placed on administrative leave by the school district pending further action, and her initial court appearance is scheduled for March 17.

School and Community Reaction

District officials notified families about the situation, emphasizing that at no point were students believed to be in immediate danger. The principal and local police both confirmed that children were not believed to be at risk during the incident.

The case has sparked concern among parents and community members about how personnel issues like substance use are identified and addressed in educational settings.

Broader Concerns About School Safety

Teachers are entrusted with the daily care of children, and parents often assume that schools have strict safeguards in place to protect students. Incidents involving staff members and illegal substances raise questions about:

• How school officials respond to early warning signs
• Communication between staff and administrators about possible issues
• How tips from anonymous staff or parents are investigated
• Policies for keeping students safe when staff behavior changes

School resource officers and counseling staff can play a role in identifying early concerns, but many parents say they want clearer systems for reporting and responding to unusual behavior among faculty and staff.

What Happens Next

Laubenstein’s case is now moving through the criminal justice system. As she faces charges related to possession of a controlled substance near a school, the district continues to monitor the situation and update families as appropriate.

Parents and educators alike are following the story to understand how it might impact their own schools and what steps districts take when concerns arise about the wellbeing of staff and the safety of students.
