Mom Took 3-Year-Old on First Date With Man She Met Online & Then He Kidnapped Them Both

A Florida mom says what should have been a first date turned into a terrifying experience for her and her 3-year-old daughter — leaving many parents online questioning how safe it really is to bring children on early outings with someone you just met.

According to police and arrest reports, the Orlando woman met a man she had been talking to on the Facebook dating app about two weeks before the incident. After several video calls and messaging, he offered to buy her a train ticket and invited her to Miami to celebrate his birthday.

Instead of meeting at a restaurant as she expected, the man allegedly took the mom and her toddler to his apartment. The woman told police she began to feel uncomfortable when he tried to get physically close to her, and she asked to leave.

Authorities allege the man then blocked her exit, grabbed her and tried to keep her from leaving. They say he briefly took her phone and tried to silence her as she called out for help. The woman eventually managed to get herself and her daughter into another room and locked the door, then contacted a friend who called 911.

Responding officers say they heard the woman calling for help when they arrived. The man was taken into custody and charged with kidnapping, battery by strangulation, child neglect, robbery and false imprisonment.

The woman and her daughter were rescued unharmed, though police say the child was present during the frightening encounter.

Parents Are Divided Online

Since the news broke, many parents have shared their reactions online, and opinions vary widely.

Some say the mom’s instincts saved her and her child:

“Every parent should trust the feeling that something ‘isn’t right.’ Bringing your kid into a situation with someone you’ve just met should be a red flag,” one commenter wrote in a parenting group.

Others acknowledge the difficulty single parents face when dating:

“Single moms shouldn’t have to choose between protecting their kids and enjoying their lives,” another wrote. “We all want companionship, but safety has to come first.”

Still others are urging parents to rethink how early and where they meet someone they’ve met online, especially when children are involved.

Safety Tips Parents Are Talking About

After this incident, many parents are sharing safety recommendations that they say everyone, especially single parents, should consider before agreeing to meet a date in person:

  • Always meet first dates in a public place.
  • Don’t bring children on a first meeting with someone you’ve only met online.
  • Tell a friend or family member exactly where and when you’re going.
  • Keep your phone accessible and fully charged.
  • Trust your instincts if you feel uncomfortable.

While every situation is different, many say this case is a reminder that even seemingly normal plans can take a dangerous turn — and that thinking ahead doesn’t hurt.

As more details continue to be reported, this story has reopened an ongoing discussion among parents about how much caution is enough when kids are involved and dating apps are part of the equation.
