The following afternoon Mrs. Carter gently asked Noah whether everything was going well. She carefully avoided making him feel as though he had done something wrong.

“I’m fine,” he answered with a polite smile that looked different from the hidden ones she had witnessed.

When she mentioned enjoying his drawings, he quickly thanked her, collected his backpack, and asked if he could leave for the bus before the conversation continued.
