Man Poured Coffee on His Wife’s Head During an Argument, Then Police Say Their Son Strangled Him to Death

A domestic dispute in upstate New York turned deadly after an argument between a husband and wife escalated into a violent confrontation involving their adult son, according to authorities.

Police say the incident began with a heated argument between a married couple inside their home. But by the end of the night, the husband was dead and the couple’s son was facing a second-degree murder charge.

According to investigators, New York State Police responded to a 911 call on the evening of Feb. 25 at a residence in Russell, a small town in St. Lawrence County near the Canadian border. When officers arrived, they discovered a man later identified as Philip Knickerbocker, 63, deceased inside the home.

Authorities said Knickerbocker was found on a couch in the residence after the situation had already unfolded.

As investigators worked to determine what happened, police say they learned the events leading up to the death began with a confrontation between Knickerbocker and his wife in the living room of their home.

Court documents later revealed the argument allegedly became aggressive. During the dispute, Knickerbocker reportedly poured coffee over his wife’s head and attempted to punch her, according to the documents cited in the investigation.

The couple’s son, Hans Knickerbocker, 40, was in another room at the time but became aware of the altercation, authorities said.

According to investigators, the son confronted his father after hearing the argument escalate. Police say the confrontation quickly turned physical.

Officials allege that during the struggle, Hans struck his father in the head and then used his hands to choke him, placing pressure on his father’s throat until he stopped breathing.

Emergency responders later confirmed that Philip Knickerbocker had died inside the home.

Authorities initially arrested the son on a charge related to obstructing breathing or blood circulation following the incident. However, the case quickly developed further once medical examiners completed an autopsy.

Investigators say the autopsy determined that Philip Knickerbocker’s cause of death was asphyxia due to strangulation, and the manner of death was ruled a homicide.

Following that determination, prosecutors upgraded the charges.

Hans Knickerbocker was subsequently charged with second-degree murder, according to court records.

In a felony complaint obtained by investigators, prosecutors allege that the son “intentionally caused the death” of his father by choking him and restricting his ability to breathe.

After his arraignment in court, Hans Knickerbocker was remanded to the St. Lawrence County Jail without bail, where he remains while the case moves through the legal system.

Authorities have not publicly said whether the wife involved in the initial argument is the biological mother of the suspect. Officials also have not confirmed whether the son has obtained legal representation.

Domestic disputes that escalate into violence can unfold rapidly, often leaving families and communities struggling to understand how situations spiral out of control so quickly.

Experts who study family violence say conflicts involving multiple family members can become especially volatile when emotions are already running high.

When relatives attempt to intervene in heated arguments, situations can escalate unexpectedly.

In this case, investigators say what began as an argument between a husband and wife ultimately ended with the father dead and the son accused of causing his death.

For now, authorities say the investigation remains ongoing as prosecutors prepare for the next steps in the case.
