Excitement Filled the House the Night Before

The boy carefully packed his backpack and even picked out his favorite shirt before going to bed. Although he knew his father would not be attending, he still asked his mom if there might be another adult who could come instead. She explained that everyone in the family had to work and none of their relatives lived nearby.

He nodded and said it was okay. His mother believed he understood, but she noticed he became unusually quiet before bedtime.

The Cafeteria Looked Different That Morning

Months later, the boy still remembered the teacher who chose to sit down instead of walking past. He told his mother that he barely remembered what kind of donut he ate, but he remembered how it felt when someone noticed he was alone.
