When Jason Miller’s sister offered to watch his two children while he worked late, he initially felt relieved. Then she casually mentioned that her new roommate would be the one staying with the kids for part of the evening, and Jason immediately said no.

Jason was finishing dinner when his sister, Megan, sent him a text saying she could watch eight-year-old Lily and six-year-old Owen on Thursday night. Megan called instead of texting back and explained that Chris was a friend from work who had moved into the apartment a few weeks earlier. She said he was quiet, responsible, and had already met Lily and Owen briefly when they visited her apartment.

Jason asked whether Chris would actually be responsible for the children while Megan was gone. Megan said yes, but only for a couple of hours. Jason immediately replied, “Then I need to meet him first.”

After Chris left the room to help Owen find another game, Megan quietly told Jason that he had made the situation much more serious than necessary. She said Chris had been living with her for weeks and had never caused a problem.

Jason replied that he was glad to hear that. But he also told her that knowing someone had behaved well as a roommate was different from knowing how they would react when two children were crying, arguing, or refusing to follow instructions.

Jason smiled because Chris had remembered the children’s interests. He asked a few final questions, showed Chris where the emergency contacts were posted, and explained the house rules.

Chris laughed and told Jason that Owen had changed the rules three times. Jason smiled because it sounded exactly like the kind of evening he had hoped for.

Later that night, Megan called Jason and admitted that she had initially thought he was being unreasonable. She said she had viewed Chris as someone she trusted and had forgotten that Jason did not have the same history with him.
