Mom Says Her Teen Refuses to Do Homework After School and Claims “Mental Exhaustion”
A mother says she and her teenage son are struggling to agree on what responsibilities should look like after a long school day.
According to her account, the conflict began when her son started refusing to complete homework assignments in the evenings.
The teen reportedly told his mother that after spending seven hours at school, he felt mentally exhausted and needed time to relax instead of continuing academic work.
The mother said she initially assumed the behavior was temporary.
But the pattern has continued for several weeks, with her son often choosing video games or social media over assignments.
When she attempts to enforce homework time, she says the conversation quickly turns into an argument.
The teen reportedly insists that school should be the only place where academic work happens.
The disagreement highlights a growing debate among parents and educators about student workload outside the classroom.
In recent years, some educators have questioned whether large amounts of homework are beneficial for students, particularly younger teens.
Research from the National Education Association suggests that excessive homework can sometimes contribute to stress, sleep deprivation, and burnout among students.
However, many teachers argue that homework helps reinforce lessons and build independent study skills.
Educational psychologist Dr. Laura Bennett says the key issue may be balance.
“Students do need time to rest and recharge after school,” Bennett explained. “But learning how to manage responsibilities is also an important life skill.”
She recommends families create structured routines that include time for both homework and relaxation.
For the mother who shared the story, finding that balance has been difficult.
She says she wants to support her son’s mental well-being while also making sure he develops the discipline needed to succeed academically.
